How it works
A bearing is a mechanical component that lets a part rotate freely around an axis, with minimal friction and no play, while supporting loads. A motorcycle has many: wheel bearings (front and rear, carrying weight and cornering loads), steering head bearings (which give precise, smooth steering), swingarm bearings, and bearings inside the engine (crankshaft main bearings, gearbox shaft bearings). A ball or roller bearing consists of two races (inner and outer) between which balls or rollers roll, held by a cage and lubricated with grease, often protected by seals (oil seals on wheels). Failure modes: normal wear from mileage, but above all water and dust getting in when a seal has failed or after a poorly aimed pressure wash, lack of lubrication, or impact damage. A worn bearing develops play, rough spots, and makes a characteristic noise (a rumble that tracks speed for a wheel bearing, a deep noise that tracks engine speed for an internal engine bearing). Wheel and steering bearings are safety-critical parts: a failing wheel bearing can cause dangerous vibration or lock the wheel, and a worn steering bearing creates rough spots and instability. Diagnosis (checking for play and noise, wheel raised off the ground) is straightforward; replacement calls for specialized tools (a puller, a press) and is done in pairs along with the seals.
Maintenance tips
- Periodically check wheel bearing play with the bike on a stand: grab the tire top and bottom and check for lateral play, then spin the wheel to detect roughness or rumbling. Any abnormal play or noise calls for replacement.
- Check the steering head bearings: turn the bars to full lock and release - the steering shouldn't feel rough or notch at center (a sign of a worn bearing). Play can be felt by applying the front brake at a standstill and rocking the forks forward and back.
- Avoid pointing a pressure washer directly at wheel axles and the steering head: it flushes out the grease and lets water in, ruining both the bearings and their seals.
- Replace wheel bearings in pairs (both sides) and with new oil seals: a failed seal is often the root cause of wear (letting in water and dust).
- Deal promptly with a suspect wheel or steering bearing: these are safety-critical parts, and failure can cause dangerous vibration, a locked wheel, or instability.
- Torque the wheel axle nut to spec on reassembly: incorrect torque preloads the bearings incorrectly and speeds up their wear.
- Leave replacement (pressing bearings out and in, sometimes with heat) to an equipped professional if you don't have the tools: a badly fitted bearing is damaged from the start.
