Valve stem seals

Stop oil from running down the valve stems.

How it works

Valve stem seals (also called valve guide seals) are small heat-resistant elastomer seals that cap the top of each valve guide on a four-stroke engine. To understand their role, picture the valve itself: it slides up and down in a guide lubricated by the oil present in the cylinder head, opening and closing the intake or exhaust port. Without a seal, oil from the head would flow freely down the valve stem into the combustion chamber (on the intake side) or into the exhaust port (where it would burn). The valve stem seal precisely limits this downward flow of oil, letting through only the tiny film needed to lubricate the stem in its guide. With heat, time, and millions of opening cycles, these seals harden, crack, or lose their sealing lip. Oil then seeps down along the stems, especially with the engine switched off, when it has time to pool. On the next start, or on restarting after sitting for a while (a red light), this pooled oil burns off all at once: you get the characteristic puff of blue smoke that clears once the engine warms up and the revs settle. It's this timing - smoke on startup that then clears - that distinguishes worn valve seals from worn rings (which smoke continuously and under load). Worn valve guides are often found alongside this. Replacement (removing the cylinder head, or fitting a valve spring compressor with the engine in place) is a workshop job.

Maintenance tips

  • Stick to oil change intervals and oil quality: degraded oil and deposits speed up the hardening and premature wear of valve stem seals.
  • Watch for the tell-tale symptom: a puff of blue smoke on a cold start (or on restarting after sitting) that clears once the engine is warm points to these seals.
  • Check the oil level regularly: worn valve stem seals slowly lower the level, with no visible leak on the ground or on the engine cases.
  • If top-end work is already being done for another reason, have the valve stem seals replaced as a precaution: the labor to access them is already being paid for.
  • Have valve guide wear checked at the same time, since it's frequently found alongside worn seals: replacing only the seals on worn guides won't solve the problem for long.
  • Don't confuse this blue smoke (oil) with white smoke (water/coolant) or black smoke (excess fuel): the diagnosis and repair are very different.
