Head gasket

Seals the cylinder head to the block (compression, coolant, oil).

How it works

The head gasket is a flat sealing component sandwiched between the cylinder head (the engine's "lid," which carries the valves and combustion chambers) and the cylinder block. Its job is critical: it seals off three circuits that must never mix. First, the combustion chamber, subject to very high pressure and temperature, which it seals around each cylinder. Second, the coolant circuit, whose passages cross the gasket surface to circulate between block and head. Third, the oil circuit, which rises to lubricate the valve train in the head. The head gasket, generally a multi-layer steel (MLS) design on modern engines, has to withstand this extreme environment while being compressed to a precise clamping load by the head bolts. Failure modes: overheating is cause number one - it warps and distorts the gasket surface (especially on aluminum heads), which doesn't spring back to its original shape and then leaks. Incorrect torque, aging, or a flatness defect all raise the risk. When the gasket fails, the circuits start communicating: coolant gets into the combustion chamber (white smoke, dropping level), combustion gases get into the coolant (a bubbling overflow tank, overheating), or coolant and oil mix (a beige, "milkshake"-like emulsion under the oil filler cap). Signs: persistent white smoke when hot, a sweet smell, overheating, coolant loss with no external leak, milkshake-like oil. Repair (removing the head, checking and resurfacing flatness, reassembling to torque with a new gasket) is major work best left to a professional.

Maintenance tips

  • The best protection for the head gasket is avoiding overheating: watch the temperature gauge, never ignore a temperature warning light, and pull over to let the engine cool if the temperature climbs into the red.
  • Maintain the cooling circuit: correct level, coolant replaced at regular intervals (often every two to four years - check your manual), hoses and thermostat in good condition all reduce the overheating risk that kills the gasket.
  • Watch for early warning signs: a slight coolant loss with no visible leak, white smoke that persists when hot, or a trace of emulsion under the oil filler cap deserve a prompt check.
  • Never unscrew the radiator cap on a hot engine: besides the burn risk, a sudden pressure drop can reveal or worsen a failing gasket.
  • Don't rely on "head gasket sealer" additives as a lasting fix: they can clog the cooling circuit and mask a problem that keeps getting worse.
  • If a severe overheating event has occurred, have the head's flatness checked even without immediate symptoms: an incipient warp often ends up taking down the gasket later.
