Lubrication

Engine oil & filter

Lubricates, cools and cleans the engine β€” and, on a bike, the gearbox and clutch too.

How it works

Oil circulates under pressure to lubricate moving parts, carry away heat, and capture impurities (trapped by the oil filter). On most motorcycles, the same oil also lubricates the wet clutch: it needs to be JASO MA2 certified. Worn or unsuitable oil makes gear changes stiff and causes the clutch to slip.

Maintenance tips

  • Change the oil at manufacturer intervals, with a fresh filter every time.
  • Use a motorcycle-specific JASO MA2 oil (not an "economy" automotive oil).
  • Check the level regularly.
