Drum brake
A shoe-type braking system, common on the rear of scooters and small bikes.
How it works
A cable (or rod) spreads lined shoes that rub against the inside of a drum bolted to the wheel. Simple and robust, it needs its free play adjusted periodically. Seized cams or a stuck cable keep the shoes extended (a dragging brake); worn linings reduce effectiveness.
Maintenance tips
- Adjust the free play of the linkage.
- Lubricate the cable and cams, without greasing the linings.
