Brake caliper
The hydraulic 'clamp' that pushes the pads onto the disc.
How it works
The caliper houses one or more pistons that, under fluid pressure, clamp the pads against the disc; it releases when you let go of the lever. A seized piston (corrosion, dirt) keeps the pad in contact permanently: constant friction, overheating, and rapid wear result. Servicing (cleaning, new seals) restores it.
Maintenance tips
- Clean and free up the pistons during servicing.
- Grease the guide pins (with brake-rated grease).
- Bleed the system after any work.
