Clutch
Connects or separates the engine from the gearbox to pull away and change gear.
How it works
The clutch is the component that connects or separates the engine from the gearbox, allowing smooth starts, gear changes, and stops with the engine still running. Most motorcycles use a wet multi-plate clutch: an alternating stack of friction plates (linked to the clutch basket, and therefore the engine) and steel plates (linked to the clutch hub, and therefore the gearbox), pressed together by springs. When the plates are clamped together (lever released), friction transmits the full engine torque to the transmission. When you pull the lever, a mechanism separates the plates: the engine disengages from the gearbox, letting you shift gears or come to a stop. The oil bath lubricates and cools the plates, which is why using the right oil matters so much. Some motorcycles (often larger cruisers or older models) use a dry clutch instead. Failure modes include: worn friction plates (insufficient thickness) or plates glazed by overheating, weakened springs, a poorly adjusted clutch cable free play, and - a common and often underestimated cause - unsuitable engine oil. Many car oils contain 'friction modifier' additives for fuel economy that make even a perfectly healthy wet clutch slip: you absolutely need oil rated JASO MA or MA2 for motorcycle use. Signs of trouble: a slipping clutch (revs climb without road speed following, accompanied by a burning smell), or conversely a clutch that grabs, judders, or doesn't disengage cleanly. Adjusting the free play and checking the oil are simple jobs; replacing the plates and springs requires opening the engine case.
Maintenance tips
- Always use engine oil rated JASO MA or MA2 for a wet clutch: car oil with 'fuel economy' additives will make an otherwise healthy clutch slip.
- Regularly check and adjust the clutch lever free play (a small amount of slack at the lever): too little free play keeps the clutch slightly disengaged, causing it to slip and overheat.
- On a cable-operated clutch, lubricate the cable and make sure it slides freely; on a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid level and condition, and look for leaks at the master cylinder and slave cylinder.
- Avoid unnecessarily slipping the clutch (prolonged slipping starts, riding at the friction point): this wears and glazes the friction plates prematurely.
- If the clutch is slipping, check the free play and the oil first before considering opening the engine case: these two simple, inexpensive causes are by far the most common.
- When replacing plates, note the exact stacking order, measure the friction plate thickness and the free length of the springs against the manual's minimum specs, and torque everything down in a criss-cross pattern on reassembly.
- Stick to the oil change intervals: oil at the end of its life loses its properties and, on some engines, can contribute to clutch slipping or grabbing.
