Timing (chain/tensioner)
Synchronises the valves with the crankshaft.
How it works
The timing drive is the mechanical assembly that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft (the bottom end) with that of the camshaft (which controls the valves), so the valves open and close at exactly the right point in the cycle. On most motorcycles this link is provided by a timing chain (more rarely a toothed belt or gears), kept constantly taut by a tensioner (often hydraulic, fed by engine oil) and guided by wear-resistant guide blades. The tensioner automatically takes up chain stretch to keep it tight and quiet. Timing - the exact relative position of the crankshaft and camshaft - is set using timing marks; it must be respected rigorously, since any misalignment throws off valve opening. Failure modes: a weakening or seizing tensioner (the chain loosens and rattles), a stretched timing chain from wear, guide blades that crumble (especially with neglected oil), and, worst case, the chain jumping a tooth or skipping. The major consequence: on a so-called "interference" engine, a timing jump lets the pistons strike the valves, destroying the engine. Warning signs: a metallic rattle from the top of the engine that tracks engine speed and doesn't fade when hot (or even gets worse). This is a critical part: any clear timing-chain noise calls for prompt diagnosis, since the risk of failure grows with every kilometer.
Maintenance tips
- Stick rigorously to oil changes and oil quality: on most engines the timing chain tensioner is hydraulic and fed by engine oil; degraded oil or a low level makes it ineffective and lets the chain rattle.
- Pay attention to any metallic rattle from the top of the engine that tracks engine speed and persists (or worsens) when hot: it's the warning sign of a tired timing drive, to be diagnosed without delay.
- On engines with a timing belt (rarer in motorcycles), strictly respect the recommended replacement interval: a belt that breaks destroys the engine.
- Never let a clear timing-drive noise go unaddressed: a chain jump on an interference engine lets the valves and pistons collide - that's a destroyed engine.
- When work is done on the timing drive, insist on timing set to the manufacturer's marks and torqued to spec: a timing error distorts the valve opening curve and damages the engine.
- Have the tensioner checked on its own before condemning the whole timing drive: it's sometimes the sole culprit, and replacing it is far cheaper than a full rebuild.
- Leave chain or timing belt replacement to a professional: it's an expert-level job where the smallest timing error has serious consequences.
