Steering head

The axis that links the forks to the frame and lets you steer.

How it works

The steering head pivots on preloaded bearings. If they wear or develop 'notching' (a hard spot at center), or if the play is poorly adjusted, low-speed weaving and vague steering appear. This is a safety-critical item to check, especially after a fall.

Maintenance tips

  • Check for a hard spot with the front wheel raised off the ground.
  • Adjust the preload without overtightening.
