Kill switch, side-stand, clutch, brake: the safety cut-outs that allow starting.
How it works
Many models will only let the engine start under certain conditions: the kill switch set to RUN, the side stand up, the transmission in neutral or the clutch pulled in (motorcycles), or the brake lever squeezed (scooters). A dirty or faulty switch can prevent starting altogether or cause random stalling. This is also the first thing to check, and it costs nothing.
Maintenance tips
- Always check the safety switches before pulling anything apart.
- A temperamental brake or side-stand switch is a simple, inexpensive replacement.
