Shaft drive
Transmits power to the wheel via a shaft and bevel gears (some bikes).
How it works
On shaft-drive motorcycles, a drive shaft replaces the chain and turns a bevel gear set in the rear final drive, running in an oil bath. Very durable and clean, it needs little maintenance beyond a periodic final-drive oil change. Any play or noise from the final drive calls for a specialist inspection.
Maintenance tips
- Stick to the final-drive oil change interval.
- Any growling noise from the final drive should be diagnosed.
