Ignition coil & CDI
Generates the high voltage sent to the spark plug at the exact moment of ignition.
How it works
The coil steps up low voltage to several thousand volts for the spark plug; the CDI/ECU unit manages the exact timing of the spark (the advance). A weakening coil or a cracked spark plug cap causes misfires and stalling, especially when hot. Poorly managed timing advance can also cause knocking.
Maintenance tips
- Check the spark plug cap and lead.
- A misfire that worsens when hot points to the coil.
