How it works

The battery is the motorcycle's electrical energy reservoir. Its first job is to supply the intense current the starter needs to crank the engine (on the order of 100 to 200 A for the split second of cranking), and to power the electronics, lights, and accessories when the engine isn't running or isn't yet producing enough current. Once the engine is running, the charging system (alternator plus regulator-rectifier) takes over: it powers the bike and recharges the battery. Most motorcycles use a 12 V battery. There are several technologies: classic lead-acid batteries (with caps, requiring maintenance β€” electrolyte level to monitor), AGM/maintenance-free batteries (absorbed electrolyte, sealed), gel batteries, and increasingly lithium batteries (LiFePO4: lighter, but sensitive to cold and requiring a compatible charger). A fully charged battery reads around 12.6 to 12.8 V at rest; below 12.4 V it's weak, under 11.7 V it's discharged, and if voltage collapses below 9.5 V during cranking, a cell is likely dead. Failure modes: plate wear and sulfation (average lifespan 3 to 4 years), repeated deep discharge, low electrolyte level, corroded terminals, freezing in winter on a discharged battery. The battery naturally self-discharges at rest (on the order of 0.5 to 1% per day), which explains breakdowns coming out of winter. Signs of end of life: sluggish starter, temperamental starting after a few days parked, voltage that stays low even after charging.

Maintenance tips

  • Regularly check the resting voltage with a multimeter: a healthy, charged battery reads around 12.6 to 12.8 V with the ignition off. Below 12.4 V, recharge it; if it won't hold a charge, it's probably at the end of its life.
  • In winter, or during any extended lay-up, connect the battery to a smart trickle charger (matched to your battery type): a battery left sitting sulfates and dies prematurely.
  • Keep the terminals clean and firmly tightened, and protect them with contact grease or petroleum jelly. Always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last to avoid any short circuit.
  • On a serviceable lead-acid battery (with caps), periodically check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled water if needed, without going past the max mark. AGM, gel, and lithium batteries are maintenance-free.
  • Use a charger compatible with your battery's technology: a lithium (LiFePO4) battery needs a dedicated charger and can't be charged like a lead-acid one, or you risk damaging it.
  • Replace the battery with a matching reference (voltage, capacity in Ah, dimensions, type, polarity, a trusted brand like Yuasa, Varta, Bosch) and fully charge it before first use if needed.
  • If the battery drains unusually fast, first rule out corroded terminals, then have the charging voltage checked with the engine running (13.5-14.8 V expected) and look for a possible parasitic current draw when parked.
