Opens and closes the valves at the right moment (4-stroke engines).
How it works
Driven by the timing drive, the camshaft has lobes that press on the valves to open them, with springs handling closure. Timing relative to the crankshaft has to be precise. Worn lobes or incorrect timing causes power loss and a rough idle.
Maintenance tips
- Adjusting valve clearance keeps things running properly.
- Clean oil limits wear on the cam lobes.
