Engine acoustics guide
Identify an internal fault by ear: four sound signatures and what they reveal.
An ailing engine talks before it breaks. The type of noise, the revs at which it appears, how it changes hot versus cold, and where it comes from strongly steer the diagnosis of internal wear. This matrix distinguishes the four classic bottom-end acoustic signatures: rod bearing, crankshaft main bearings, piston-to-bore clearance and cam chain. Use it to put a name to what you hear, gauge the severity, and know what to have checked — listening with an engine stethoscope and confirming by measurement remain a professional's job.

Rod knock
Critical- Sound character
- Sharp, metallic double-knock, loud, standing clearly out from the normal hum
- Revs / load
- Low and mid revs, intensifies under load on acceleration and on throttle pickup
- Cold / hot
- Present when hot, often worse once the oil is hot and thin; does not disappear
- Location
- Bottom end, at the crankcase / big-end area
- Likely origin
- Excessive clearance at the big-end bearing (worn shell, lack of oil pressure, neglected oil). Risk of rod failure in the short term.
Main bearing rumble
High- Sound character
- Deep, continuous roar, lower-pitched than the rod, almost a droning rumble
- Revs / load
- Across the whole range, builds with revs and load
- Cold / hot
- Constant, often with a drop in oil pressure when hot
- Location
- Bottom end, spread along the crankshaft
- Likely origin
- Worn main-bearing journals (plain shells on 4T, needle roller cages on 2T) and crankshaft play. Often linked to falling oil pressure.

Watch- Sound character
- Hollow, dull clack, a bit 'tin-can', softer than rod knock
- Revs / load
- Mainly at idle and low revs, when cold; fades as it warms up
