On a manual choke, check that the cable properly actuates the choke flap or plunger and that the carburetor's choke circuit (choke jet, well) isn't clogged. On an automatic enricher (a thermostatic element heated electrically or by coolant), check its power supply, the heating element's resistance, and its movement: an enricher that no longer opens when cold (or stays open when warm) needs to be replaced. This is an intermediate-level job. Safety: fuel is flammable, work in a ventilated space. Risk level: moderate. - Identify your setup: manual choke (lever/knob actuating a cable) or automatic enricher (an electrical unit or one linked to the coolant, with no handlebar control).
- On a manual choke, check that the cable fully actuates the choke mechanism on the carburetor through its whole travel, and that it returns properly. Lubricate a stiff cable, adjust its tension, or replace a fraying one.
- Still on a manual setup, remove and clean the carburetor's choke circuit (choke jet, well, and passages) with carb cleaner and compressed air: a clogged choke circuit stops enriching the mixture even if the control itself works fine.
- On an automatic enricher, check its electrical supply (presence of voltage) and the heating element's resistance against the manual's values: a broken or out-of-spec resistance keeps it from working properly.
- Check the movement of the automatic enricher's plunger/flap (cold, then warmed up): it should enrich when cold, then close gradually. If it stays stuck in one position, replace it.
- Reassemble everything, reconnect hoses and connectors, turn the fuel back on, and check for leaks.
- Test it cold (ideally after sitting overnight): the bike should start readily with the choke and hold idle, then run cleanly once warm with the choke closed.
