Several parts of the fuel system can be at fault: a blocked tank vent (which creates a vacuum that intermittently cuts off fuel flow), a clogged fuel tap or its strainer/filter, a blocked fuel filter, or a pinched or cracked hose restricting flow. The engine ends up getting fuel in fits and starts: it runs for a while then stalls, especially when demand increases or once the tank vacuum builds up. The approach: check each link in the chain -- clear the vent, clean or replace the tap/filter, replace a damaged hose -- and confirm fuel is flowing properly and consistently (by carefully disconnecting the hose at the carburetor to watch the flow). This is an intermediate-level job. Safety: fuel is flammable, so work in a ventilated space, tap closed while handling parts, away from any flame. Risk level: moderate. How to make the repair yourself

  1. Work in a ventilated space, away from any flame. Start with the simplest test, for the vent: when the engine stalls/hesitates, loosen the tank cap slightly and see if things improve (a hiss of released pressure confirms a blocked vent).
  2. If the vent is the cause, clear the cap's vent hole or the vent hose (clean with compressed air, without enlarging the opening), then close the cap properly again -- riding with it loose isn't a lasting fix.
  3. Check the fuel tap and its strainer/filter (often submerged in the tank): clean it if it's clogged with deposits or rust, a frequent cause of irregular fuel delivery.
  4. Find the inline fuel filter (if there is one) on the hose: a clogged filter restricts flow. Replace it with a new one, in the correct orientation (arrow pointing toward the carburetor).
  5. Trace the fuel hoses along their entire run: replace any hose that's pinched, crushed by a component, cracked, or porous with a fuel-rated hose, and fit new clamps.
  6. Confirm fuel is flowing properly and consistently: tap open (or set to PRI for a vacuum tap), disconnect the hose at the carburetor over a container and check for a steady, even flow (carefully -- fuel is flammable).
  7. If flow is still weak or uneven despite all this, check further upstream (a failing vacuum tap, or a fuel pump on models that have one) depending on your bike.
  8. Reassemble everything, turn the fuel back on, check for leaks, and take a test ride long enough to put the fuel system under real demand: the engine should no longer stall or hesitate from fuel starvation.
