How to make the repair yourself
🟡 Intermediate level: a few basic tools and a bit of method are all you need. Work with a cold engine, take your time, and don't hesitate to stop the moment you're unsure.
- Clean both tubes carefully. Try the gentle method first: slide a 'seal mate' (or the smooth corner of a film) under the seal lip, go round to dislodge any dirt, compress the fork several times, clean and re-test.
- If the leak comes back, plan the removal: put the bike on a stand with the front wheel in the air (lift under the engine), remove the front wheel, mudguard, brake caliper (hang it without stretching the hose).
- Undo the upper clamp pinch bolts then pull out the fork leg. Work one leg at a time to keep the other as a reference.
- Drain the used oil, remove the dust boot then the seal (retaining clip + extraction). Clean the groove and the tube.
- Fit the new seal with a suitable driver (or a PVC tube of the right diameter), without marking the lip; refit the clip and a new dust boot.
- Refill with the recommended fork oil (manufacturer's viscosity and volume/level, measured fork compressed without spring). Refit the leg, set the height in the clamps, torque.
- Refit wheel, caliper, mudguard. Pump the front brake until firm. Check for the absence of a leak after a few kilometres.
