ABS warning light on the dashboard

Warning: the ABS light stays on while riding: this means the anti-lock system is disabled. Important to understand: your regular brakes keep working normally (you brake just as before), but without the assistance that keeps the wheels from locking during emergency braking or on a slippery surface. So you can still ride, but carefully: avoid very hard braking (risk of wheel lock and a fall, especially on wet ground) and have it diagnosed promptly. ABS monitors each wheel's speed via a sensor reading a toothed ring; a control unit compares the wheels and modulates brake pressure to prevent lockup. Causes of the warning light: a fouled or misaligned ABS wheel sensor (metal filings, mud, brake dust) — often fixable with a simple cleaning; a genuinely failed sensor (cut wire, broken coil); a blown ABS fuse or a loose connection; or, more rarely, the ABS control unit itself. The distinction comes from when the light turns on (right from ignition and never going out, or going out then coming back on while riding) and from inspecting the sensors and fuse. Since ABS is a safety device (expert-only safety lock), reliable diagnosis requires reading the fault code with a diagnostic tool, and work on the sensors and control unit is a professional's job. Only checking a fuse or a loose connection is accessible. Urgency threshold: no immediate danger as long as you brake gently, but don't delay getting it repaired — and above all, never permanently disable ABS just to make the light go away.
