Free play is the small amount of slack in the lever before the clutch starts to engage. Too much free play (a slack cable, or a poorly bled hydraulic setup): pulling the lever all the way in no longer fully separates the plates, the clutch "drags," gears crunch going in, and finding neutral gets hard. Too little free play (adjusted too tight): the clutch stays slightly disengaged all the time, doesn't clamp properly, slips, and runs hot. Correct adjustment restores proper free play (often somewhere around 2 to 3 mm of play at the lever tip -- check your manual) so the clutch fully disengages AND fully engages. This is the very first thing to check, before suspecting the oil or the plates, since it's free and a common culprit. On a cable-operated clutch, you adjust it at the barrel adjuster/cable adjuster; on a hydraulic setup, you check the fluid level and bleed the system. This is a basic job. Risk level: low.
