Weak / spongy brakes

Warning: braking is safety-critical β€” if you have any doubt, don't ride and get it checked by a professional. Braking lacks bite, the lever (or pedal) feels soft and sinks, or you need to squeeze hard to slow down. Two broad families of causes, separated by a simple test: a SOFT lever that sinks points to a hydraulic problem (air in the circuit, aged brake fluid that's absorbed water and boils under heat β€” "vapor lock"), while a FIRM lever with weak braking points to a friction problem (worn pads, or a glazed/greasy disc or pads). This distinction matters because it leads to very different fixes: hydraulic problems (bleeding, fluid) touch the circuit and are classified expert-only (leave to a professional), while replacing worn pads or degreasing are intermediate-level DIY jobs β€” but always handled with rigor on this vital component. Basic checks include: pad thickness (is there friction material left?), brake fluid level and color (clear = good, dark brown = aged), and lever firmness. Urgency threshold: failing brakes are an immediate danger. If the lever sinks to the handlebar, if the brakes no longer respond, or if you have any doubt about their effectiveness, DON'T RIDE β€” get it towed or repaired on the spot. Better to spend 30 euros on a diagnosis than to be unable to stop. Braking allows no shortcuts: at the slightest doubt, go to a professional.
