Dimming headlights / charging problem
The headlight brightness varies with engine revs (dim at idle, brighter when you rev), the dashboard dims, accessories misbehave, or a battery warning light comes on. These signs indicate the charging circuit isn't doing its job properly anymore: it's no longer maintaining a stable voltage and isn't recharging the battery enough. The charging circuit includes the alternator (a magnet-carrying rotor driven by the engine and a wound stator that produces alternating current), the regulator/rectifier (which converts this to DC and caps the voltage around 14.5V), the wiring connecting them, and the battery, which buffers everything. Causes: a failed regulator/rectifier (unstable charging, pulsing headlight, or overcharging), a failing stator/alternator (not enough current being produced), corroded or melted charging-circuit wiring (which drops the charge — a common and inexpensive cause), or simply a battery at the end of its life (rule this out first). You tell them apart with a multimeter (measuring charging voltage with the engine running, roughly 13.5 to 14.8V expected, is the go-to method) and by observation (does the headlight follow engine revs? is a battery warning light on?). Urgency: no immediate danger, but a failing charging system will eventually drain the battery and leave you stranded; and conversely, overcharging (a failed regulator) 'cooks' the battery and can damage the electronics. Better to diagnose it early. Start with the simplest and cheapest things: the battery's condition and the charging-circuit wiring.
