The 12V battery is the source of every current draw with the engine off: it powers the dash, lights, injection electronics, and above all the starter motor, which draws 100 to 200A for the split second it takes to turn the engine over. A healthy battery reads between 12.6V and 12.8V at rest (engine off, ignition off for several hours); between 12.4V and 12.6V it's partially discharged; below 12.0V it won't be able to turn the starter over. During the starting sequence, voltage briefly dips to around 10.5V on a healthy battery; if it drops below 9.5V, a cell has died and the battery needs replacing. With the engine running, voltage should climb to between 13.5V and 14.5V at 3,000-4,000 rpm -- a sign the alternator is charging properly. Recharge with a dedicated motorcycle battery charger (1 to 2A max, never a car charger, which puts out too much current) for six to twelve hours, then remeasure. If it won't hold a charge for more than 48 hours at rest, replace it -- average lifespan is 3 to 4 years. How to make the repair yourself
🟢 Within reach of any rider: no advanced mechanical skill or specialised tooling needed.
- Work safely: engine cold, ignition off, key removed. Locate the battery (often under the seat or a side cover, sometimes under the fuel tank).
- Measure resting voltage with a multimeter set to 20V DC, red probe on the + terminal and black probe on the - terminal. Note the reading.
- If voltage reads 12.4V or higher but the bike still won't start, retest under load: have someone press the starter while you watch the multimeter. A sharp drop below 9.5V confirms a dead battery.
- To recharge, disconnect the negative (black) terminal first, then the positive (red), and remove the battery. Connect the motorcycle charger respecting polarity (1 to 2A max), for 6 to 12 hours depending on how depleted it was.
- While you wait, clean the terminals with a fine wire brush or 240-grit sandpaper, dry thoroughly, and apply a thin coat of copper grease or petroleum jelly to prevent future corrosion.
- Reinstall by connecting the positive (red) terminal first, then the negative (black), and tighten the nuts firmly without overdoing it. Make sure no cable touches the frame at an unshielded point.
- Start the engine and measure voltage with it running at 3,000-4,000 rpm: between 13.5V and 14.5V means the alternator is fine. Below that, your alternator or regulator is weakening. Above 15V, the regulator has failed -- it will destroy the new battery, so get it checked right away.
- If after a full recharge the battery won't hold for more than 48 hours, replace it. Match the manufacturer's exact size/format (CB7L-B, YTX9-BS, etc.) -- getting the size wrong is a very common mistake, and the new one simply won't fit.
