Worn variator rollers

Diagnosis confirmed: the variator rollers are worn or flat-spotted, which degrades the scooter's automatic transmission (sluggish acceleration, lower top speed, sometimes clunking noises). The variator is the heart of the scooter's CVT transmission: it continuously varies the gear ratio thanks to rollers (small weights) that, under centrifugal force, spread the variator's faces apart more or less as revs climb. The rollers are wear parts: they wear down, develop flat spots, and stop sliding properly, which keeps the variator from reaching its optimal ratio -- hence the loss of acceleration and top speed, and sometimes clunking on takeoff or deceleration. The fix: open the transmission cover (left side), remove the variator, and replace the rollers with a new set of the CORRECT weight (roller mass, in grams, is critical to how the transmission behaves: stick to the original spec unless you're deliberately changing the setup), then clean the faces. This is an intermediate-level job, a classic piece of scooter maintenance, manageable with some method and the right tools (particularly for holding the variator while loosening its nut). Warning: never compress the centrifugal clutch spring (a genuinely dangerous component) during this job -- you're only working on the variator. Risk level: moderate. Cost-wise: a set of rollers runs roughly 10 to 30 euros. While it's open, take the chance to check the belt. How to make the repair yourself

🟡 Intermediate level: a few basic tools and a bit of method are all you need. Work with a cold engine, take your time, and don't hesitate to stop the moment you're unsure.

  1. With the scooter stable and the engine cold, get a set of new rollers of the CORRECT weight (the original mass in grams, stamped on or specified for your model) and, ideally, a way to hold the variator (a holding tool or strap) while loosening it.
  2. Remove the transmission cover (left side), taking out its screws and noting where each one goes. This gives you access to the variator (at the front) and the centrifugal clutch (at the rear).
  3. Lock the variator (holding tool on the moving face) and loosen its center nut (usually right-hand thread; often a high torque value). Remove the front face, and the belt can then be freed.
  4. Remove the variator's moving face to access the rollers sitting in their tracks. Note how the parts are oriented (washers, plastic guides).
  5. Remove the worn rollers and compare them to the new ones: a worn roller is flat-spotted (flattened on one side), oval, or marked. Replace the WHOLE set (never just one) with new rollers of the correct weight.
  6. Clean the variator faces and shaft of belt dust and hardened grease (a cloth, degreaser); do NOT grease the surfaces the belt runs on. Only grease the points designed for it (shaft/sliders) with a suitable grease, sparingly.
  7. Refit the moving face, the rollers the right way round, the belt, and the variator's front face, then torque the center nut to the manufacturer's spec (a high torque value -- don't settle for a rough guess).
  8. Refit the transmission cover, and take it for a test ride: acceleration and top speed should be restored, and any clunking gone. If the transmission still slips, check the belt and the centrifugal clutch.

⚠️ This tool helps you understand what's going on with your motorcycle; it doesn't replace the inspection or judgment of a certified mechanic. If in persistent doubt, if a safety-critical part is involved (braking, steering, bearings, transmission), or if the problem keeps recurring, have the diagnosis confirmed at a workshop before doing any work.
